      Power Generation

Did you know that the Solid Waste Management Site in Allardville does more than just bury residual materials? It also produces electricity!

Thanks to the decomposition of organic waste, a natural gas called biogas is generated. This gas, primarily composed of methane, is captured through a specially designed pipe network that directs it to a generator. There, it is converted into electrical energy, which is then fed into the NB Power grid.

This production, which ranges from about 800 to 840 kWh, is enough to power approximately 140 homes in the region. It contributes to more sustainable waste management and the recovery of renewable energy resources. By giving buried waste a second life, we reduce our ecological footprint while actively supporting the energy transition.

A Cutting-Edge Landfill for Waste Management

Since its opening in 1989, the Chaleur Regional Service Commission (CRSC) landfill site, located in Allardville (Red Pine), has played a key role in waste management for several regions in northern New Brunswick. Each year, we process 90,000 tons of waste from the Chaleur region, the Acadian Peninsula, Restigouche, and the Greater Miramichi area.

Our commitment to responsible waste management is also reflected in our recycling efforts, with approximately 3,000 tons of recyclable materials processed annually. Since its opening, the site has received a total of 2,950,000 tons of waste (as of December 31, 2024), a volume that requires rigorous management and suitable infrastructure.

      Innovation and Environmental Management

With a team of 26 full-time and part-time employees, the landfill site is continuously evolving. In June 2024, we began operating our 15th landfill cell, ensuring the continuity of our operations safely and efficiently.

Each year, we process approximately 60 million liters of leachate—commonly known as "garbage juice"—to minimize its environmental impact. Additionally, we harness biogas produced from the decomposition of organic matter to generate electricity. Through this process, we provide energy to about 135 to 140 households in the Allardville area, contributing to more sustainable waste management.

      A Commitment to the Future

The CRSC landfill site is not just about waste management: it embodies a modern and responsible approach to environmental stewardship. We are continuously investing in sustainable technologies and practices to minimize our ecological footprint while providing an essential service to the communities we serve.
