Composting
Managing our compostable materials at home
Compostable materials, also called putrescible materials, are organic substances of plant or animal origin that decay and decompose. They include dead leaves, branches, grass clippings, as well as food scraps, fruit and vegetable peels, and even used paper napkins.
About 40% of all our waste can be composted at home. For a household that recycles its materials but has not yet started composting its organic waste, this represents nearly 60% of the contents of the trash bin. If you were surprised by how much lighter your trash bin was when you started recycling… imagine it when you start composting your organic materials!
Three Composting Options
The Chaleur Regional Service Commission (CRSC) offers three options to encourage organic waste recycling within households:
The FoodCycler
The FoodCycler is a high-end composter that turns your organic waste into compost in just 6 to 8 hours. Thanks to its advanced technology, it is an ideal solution, especially in winter, as it can be used indoors without producing odors or noise. Its sleek design fits perfectly in your kitchen.
The Composter
There is a wide variety of composters available, each designed to meet specific needs. At the CRSC, we recommend using this one.
The Digester
The digester (Green Cone) offers a simple and effective solution for eliminating all household food waste, including meat, fish, and other meal leftovers without producing odors. This composting method, based on the digestion of organic matter, is one of the easiest to adopt. Just open the lid, drop in your kitchen waste, and close it. It’s that simple!
