The Solid Waste Management Department of the Chaleur Regional Service Commission (CRSC) launched a mattress and box spring recovery and recycling program in February 2024. These items are now temporarily stored in a dedicated shelter at the landfill site before being gradually sent to the Recyc-matelas center in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. In two years, over 6,000 mattresses and box springs have been recycled, contributing to significant socioeconomic and environmental benefits: reducing pollution, optimizing space in the landfill cells, extending the site’s lifespan, and minimizing waste of natural resources.
